ITEM 873

Item 873: A very Rare book in itself, and personally autographed by the author; Lydia Huntley Sigourney (1791 to 1865). This is a First Edition, as shown on the photo. It was signed in ink pen to her friend on January 1 of 1864, in her typical fancy writing style; L. H. Sigourney.

Mrs. Sigourney was one of the most popular female writers of the early to mid 19th century. She wrote about 67 books, and contributed to thousands of articles in hundreds of periodicals of her day. As result, her work inspired many women to pursue writing. Today her original books are in high demand, and a 1st Edition is prized. This book, titled "Selections from Various Sources" is even rarer, being both a 1st Edition and autographed by the author.

The book is 240 pages, including the index, the cover is hardback with gold gilding on the front & spine. The binding is tight, the pages are crisp & bright with some staining on the tops of pages 110 thru 122, though the rest of the pages are very good condition. No writing other than the author's signature & dedication in her hand on the front page, and no folds. The covers have some handling wear, and the corners are slightly bumped; the size is 7 1/2" by 5". This may be a unique copy of this book, as it was one of her last books & she signed it 18 months before she died.
